It’s safer outside! An open letter from Eric Christensen, Northeast Regional Area Manager.

"I started working in the tent and event industry in 1997. For the past 23 years I’ve watched our industry thrive during the good times and come together when times got tough.

Nothing has ever looked or felt like the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tents are where people gathered when something special was happening; weddings, graduations, festivals, sporting events, parties, concerts, fundraisers, ceremonies, anniversaries…the list goes on and on and on.

With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic these special events stopped and the tent and event industry took an immediate and catastrophic hit.
Gathering became dangerous, “shelter in place”, “social distancing” and “quarantine” became the buzz-words.

For a while, tents became part of the battle. A 20x20 frame tent became a testing tent, 10x10 tents were installed to triage patients, a few larger tents were used in hospital overflow applications. Despite the industry realizing partial relief with this essential work, most tents sat idle on shelves in tent renters’ warehouses.

For the past few weeks I’ve seen tents through a new lens. As the country plans and implements re-opening, outdoor space is considered safer than indoor space. Adding a tent to an outdoor area provides shelter from the rain and sun, allows for social distancing seating /traffic flow and all of this is happening outside, in the fresh air. Restaurants and bars have already added tents, schools and colleges are making plans to.

Tents were once “where” we gathered. Tents are now “how” we get people back together.

From my perspective just getting people back together is a special event of its own.

Eventually I’d like to see that become the new buzz-word."
